Lord Falconer, former Minister for Regeneration, visited Hastings on Friday to see the progress made since he announced the original £400m funding for the town in 2002.
Lord Falconer met Michael Foster MP and John Shaw, Director of Sea Space, the development company for Hastings and Bexhill, to see how the investment has been spent in the town centre and the new business premises around Queensway.
"I am so impressed by how much has been done in Hastings in such a short time," said Lord Falconer. "When I announced the initial £38m in government funding, and the total package of £400m, I didn't expect progress to be so rapid."
The highlight of the visit was a tour on the site of the first Enviro21 Innovation Park at South Queensway to see the sustainable business park under construction. Work began in January and the first four business units and an exhibition and meeting venue are now coming out of the ground.
Lord Falconer also had a viewing of the town centre Lacuna Place offices, completed last year, and a sneak preview of the second office phase and new public square currently under construction. He met broadcast media students who have benefited from state of the art facilities at University Centre Hastings, announced by Lord Falconer in 2002 and opened in 2003.
"I've heard so many positive stories today in Hastings – students who have moved here to study, companies that have started," said Falconer. "There are great businesses here, continuing to grow and export. I am delighted with the work that's taken place so far in the regeneration programme."
