Considerable investment has gone into skills and education in the Hastings area, with a growing emphasis on the environmental field.

University Centre Hastings

University Centre Hastings (UCH), the home of the University of Brighton in Hastings, was established in 2003 and teaches commercially-focused subjects to support the area's businesses.

The University Centre runs a joint honours programme for Environmental Biology covering biodiversity, sustainability, ecology, climate change, conservation, bio-fuel production and the environmental impact of resource exploitation. It also offers many other University of Brighton courses from broadcast media to business management and computing.

The Centre has ambitious growth plans, with a second facility under construction in Hastings town centre which will more than double its student capacity.

We have close links with the University of Brighton.

Amongst other specialisms, the University has forward-thinking engineering and environmental departments and a strong ethic of working in partnership with businesses.

It offers collaborative research, knowledge transfer, business networks, training and student placements.

In the environmental field, the University has particular expertise in carbon capture, environmental auditing, low carbon energy, transport, remediation, 'green chemistry', recycling, environmental product design and sustainable buildings.

The University runs degree courses in earth & ocean science, ecology & biogeography, environmental biology, environmental hazards and environmental sciences.

Sussex Coast College

The £100 million Sussex Coast College has opened on two sites in Hastings. With over 1,900 students enrolled, this top spec development is home for Hastings long-established college of further education and a new Academy 6 Sixth Form College – which achieved a 100% A Level pass rate in 2009.

Sussex Coast College delivers a wide range of commercial and vocational courses including business management, technology, engineering and ICT—with the best computer learning suite on the south coast.

The College has also established The Energy Centre just metres away from the first Enviro21 Innovation Park.

The Energy Centre is a new facility for training, demonstrating the latest renewable power and construction technologies and incubating energy-related business start-ups.

The Energy Centre runs a range of seminars and courses and is a training and assessment centre in gas, solar power, heat pumps and AM2 electrical installations. It is exploring the latest developments in energy sources, materials, heating and ventilation.
